RESTORATION
Audio
restoration improves the sound of audio recordings which
are impaired by clicks, pops, noise and buzz. Recordings
with moderate damage can be restored with no trace of
disturbances. Even severely damaged recordings can be
salvaged.
TRANSCRIBING SOURCES
In
transcribing recordings from tape and vinyl and other
sources into digital files, a high quality transfer will
pay dividends when it comes to applying digital
restoration. There are various professional techniques in
achieving high quality transfers. To give examples, Audio
Lab very carefully cleans records in distilled water to
remove surface grease and dust before recording them into
the digital domain. We also use the highest quality analog
to digital converters to ensure the truest signal path
possible.
AUDITORY MASKING
One
of the main techniques in audio restoration is to exploit
the auditory masking of human hearing. For example, it is
not always necessary to remove 6dB of noise in order to
make it sound as though 6dB has been removed.
SCIENCE AND ART
Audio
restoration is both a science and an art. Removing clicks,
pops and spurious tones is a science because it is clear
when we have succeeded. On the other side of the coin,
broadband noise removal is more of an art, where great
judgment is required in balancing the noise reduction
against damaging the signal. In rough terms, click removal
and tone filtering are achievable to a very high standard
because the disturbance is separated from the signal in
either the time domain or the frequency domain. Broadband
noise, however, contaminates all samples and all
frequencies. Achieving optimal results during the
restoration process requires an engineer with highly
trained ears, who specializes in removing undesired
frequencies with surgical precision. Audio Lab achieves the
upmost accuracy during the restoration process producing
stellar results.
SESSION
Each restoration
session in unique. Studio time varies according to what
your restoration project specifically requires. You are
encouraged to attend the session. A copy of your restored
audio is made at the end of the session for your review.
Listen to your restored audio! Contact us within one week
with your approval or to make any changes. Payment is due
at the end of each session.
